Abstract

This paper gathers information about araucaria, Araucaria angustifo

lia species, a tree also known as Paraná pine. It demonstrates its several aspects, explaining why such tree has become a landscape and cultural symbol of the brazilian southern region. The present study shows the importance of araucaria in ecological, socio-economic and cultural aspects, clearly expressing its great environmental representativeness for the inhabitants of the region where it is found. The paper also examines its "endangered" or "vulnerable" tree category, as it observes the positive  effects of environmental protection policies.
