This work aims at analyzing the short story “The fisherman and his soul”, by Oscar Wilde, under the perspective of the double. The text of Wilde recovers a theme whose roots lie in the mythological consciousness of ancient peoples: the shadow as personification or equivalent of the human soul. In this short story, the separation between body and shadow/soul will result in serious consequences for the protagonist: a young fisherman, belonging to the Jewish-Christian universe, who falls in love with a mermaid, a being coming from the pagan mythological universe.Downloads
