Abstract

This article analyzes some prime material images occurring in Graciliano Ramos’ Infância (1945), which lasted in the narrator’s memory and which repeatedly come to the surface in his narration. The affectionate dimensions of life in Infância are located between the reality and the ideal: the closed atmosphere and the free nature; the song and the window/door; the dryness and the humidity/liquidity. Such a dynamic reveals a character imprisoned in a rough and oppressing world, but inclined to the daydream.
