Abstract

The colonizer’s violence and the colonial subject’s resistance are the themes of Coetzee’s fi rst novel. Hierarchization and objectifi cation reveal the various layers of colonization in the formation of European ideology before the alleged inferiority of the different other. Results show the colonizer’s strategies when he is displaced from the center and relocated to the margin which, he thinks, is proper to the colonial subject. Results also show that the colonial subject denies passivity and subjectifi es himself through resistance and his recovery of his subject condition in society.
