This article presents a brief analysis of some theoretical models of reading in the literature on the reading process, as well as an account of a study on readers' beliefs about this process. By providing an outlook of the evolution of the reading research, not only can such theoretical models shed some light on readers' beliefs and their influence upon the reading process, but also contribute to the improvement of current reading practice in the foreign language class.
