This article is focused on different processes of word formation found in the morphological structure of toponyms that belong to sixteen municipalities from three administrative micro-regions in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, with prominence for the designatives formed by derivation and composition. The study examines the preference of denominators as for the choice of names, in terms of morphological structuring, highlighting the indexes of occurrences of derived and compound names as one of the characteristics of the toponymy here studied.
