Abstract

Based on examples taken from the monolingual lexicography of Spanish and bilingual dictionaries of the pair of languages Spanish/German, this article aims at highlighting the specific strengths and advantages of bilingual dictionaries in the foreign language learning context, as well as at analyzing the intrinsic limitations of this type of reference-books, together with common, but avoidable, shortcomings of many bilingual dictionaries, and to suggest successful ways of using bilingual dictionaries in foreign language teaching.
