Abstract

The first part of this paper discusses the concept of discourse topic and its characteristics. Afterwards, the modalities of topic-expansion are exposed: elucidation; exemplification or analogy; causal relations; personal opinions or evaluations; and objections or corrections.

Possui graduação em Letras (Português e Francês) pela Universidade de São Paulo (1969) , mestrado em Língua Portuguesa pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (1980) e doutorado em Filologia e Língua Portuguesa pela Universidade de São Paulo (1990) . Atualmente é Professor Adjunto da Universidade Estadual de Londrina.
