In this research we did an analysis of the indigenes toponymy of Mato Grosso do Sul and, we verified how many and how much elements motivate the denominator in the act of the choice of the indigenes names for geographic accidents. The data were obtained, essentially, from the 1987's IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) maps, scale 1-250-000. The research of the geographic names proved that when we utilize indigene names to nominate physic and human geographic accidents, elements from the nature, such as, plants, animals, the water and the soil characteristics are the main source of inspiration in the process of nomination.
