This paper presents an analysis of defined nominal expressions as a resource for constructing the image of the Supreme Court Minister, Joaquim Barbosa, in a cover story published in Veja magazine on October 10th of 2012. The theoretical basis is Text Linguistics (KOCH; TRAVAGLIA, 1991; KOCH, 1997, 2002, 2009; GALEMBECK, 2005; MARCUSCHI, 2008; BENTES, 2012) and, according to these authors, the meaning is created in the moment of interaction and the referral process is a discursive and interactional activity, carried out by social subjects, -that is, it involves a set of selections within the possibilities of language and according to intentions desired. Thus, the analysis reveals that certain intentional choices help in constructing the image of the Minister Joaquim Barbosa, the main referent of the text: the average person from humble origin, who overcame obstacles and succeeded in life. The article does not deplete the possibility of analysis, but indicates some observations that allow readers to reflect on the need for the careful reading to the constitution of sense.Metrics
