This article is intended to discuss the problem of school reading and focus the problems faced by teachers who view the reader as a mere decodifier. It further povides a short analysis of how Cabral (1986), Orlandi (1988), Poersch (1991) and Scott (1983) support the concept that the reader plays an active role in the reading process The article doses with a proposal for training on reading strategies according to Downing (1990).
