Abstract

This article discusses the results of a 12-month study involving the monitoring of three pond systems for the treatment of swine waste. The objective of the study was to find operational parameters to optimize the treatment systems. The first system included two anaerobic and one optional pond, and the second and third systems included two anaerobic ponds, two optional ponds and one maturation pond, in a series, with 90% of DQO and 76% of total nitrogen removal efficiency, on average, for the three systems. A mathematical model to minimize residue treatment costs based on economy concepts was developed.
