Abstract

We are aging and living more and more. The irreversible increasing of the aged population is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century and opens up an important and unexplored field of action for Design. This paper is supported by a bibliographical survey about the aging process and a participant observation study on the aged audience. It presents data on population aging and the history of walking sticks from its earliest moments to present times, evoking reflections on the relationship between people and artifacts and the material universe designed for the aged audience.
