The work written by Henri Acselrad, Gustavo das Neves Bezerra and Cecília Campello
do Amaral Mello can be considered a doctrinal precursor in the debate on the theme in Brazil. In
its content, the book “What is Environmental Justice” exposes the historical formulation of the
movement, its conceptual developments, as well as the mechanisms by which an environmental
injustice is perpetuated. Starting from reading the work in question, the review aims to elucidate
these points for readers interested in the theme, as well as to discuss the need to include the
discussion on the movement for Environmental Justice to the debate on sustainable development,
discussing their main contributions to the theme.
