Abstract

Social currency can be defined as a parallel currency representation instituted and managed by its own users, therefore, has its issuance originated in the private sphere of the economy. It does not need to have any mandatory link with the national currency and its circulation is based on the mutual trust between its users, participants of a group circumscribed by voluntary membership. In literature, social currencies are considered as a means of boosting the local development of poorer communities. Thus, the present study intends to make a bibliographic review on the subject, with the purpose of highlighting its relevance and pointing out its main obstacles to its functioning. The article has shown that in order to perform well and to longevity, social currencies need to maintain their symbolic and political figure associated to the economic privations of their users.
