This article seeks to present and discuss a brief historiographical balance on engraving, from its emergence as a printing technique in the West from the 16th century onwards, to the insertion of digital technologies within the scope of the so-called Graphic Arts in the 20th and 21st centuries. In the Brazilian context, the article presents existing discussions about the historical and artistic trajectory of printmaking between the 19th and 20th centuries, related to the issue of the press, printed matter and art printmaking. Thus, the text addresses the theme from its definitions, history and historiography, in which it seeks to point out and problematize the understanding of printmaking both as a technique of production, printing, reproduction and dissemination of images, and as an expressive medium conditioned to the conventions of the worlds. of art.
