Visuality and staging of the story in the film “The dragon of evil against the holy warrior” (1969) by Glauber Rocha

The main scope of this paper is to discuss and understand how is the interface between history and visual culture in the movie “Antonio das Mortes” by Glauber Rocha. In this work, the composition of themes such as honor, courage, piety, religious syncretism and the struggle between good and evil, lead us to an amazing cultural universe, of collective memory, as present in oral literature, especially in the “cordel”. The theatrical mise-en-scène and the characters’ performance, express unconscious and uncontrolled dispositions in the texture of image and sound, denying a history’s linear perspective and approaching it of an idea between myth and fable. Thus, we intend to know what the film retains these traditions and the way of expressing them cinematographically.References
