Abstract

This paper is a still work in progress that investigates issues related to the concept of visual culture and its connection with the history of art. Is it an emerging discipline, a topic of research, an area or sub-area of cultural studies? What is the status of the artistic object within the visual culture? I discuss particularly the role of the “visual culture questionnaire” to the development of the area and the debate around the concept of visual culture. The questionnaire was sent to a variety of researchers, critics and artists from North America and the answers were published in a 1996 edition of the journal October organized by Rosalind Krauss and Hal Foster.
