This study aims to investigate how Cecília Meireles engages with the symbolism of stone in Poemas Italianos, drawing from its presence in the collective imagination and the arts, particularly literature. We undertake a reinterpretation, reaffirming its manifold meanings and poetic significance. Our focus will be on analyzing the poems “Muros de Roma,” “Os aquedutos,” and, more succinctly, “Via Appia” and “Arco.” These verses articulate the evolution of a historical and artistic consciousness, unveiling the unspoken aspects of spaces transformed by human intervention. In our examination of symbols, images, rhythms, and discursive tendencies—reflecting the perspective of a Brazilian woman on the Italian landscape—we employ the postulates of Michel Collot (2013), Octavio Paz (2015), and Jean Chevalier and Alain Gheerbrant (1997). The stone, as a pivotal element in the literary landscape, discloses a dynamic space of enduring construction within these poems. Additionally, Cecília Meireles grapples with poetic language, an endeavor motivated by her travel experiences documented in the book.
