Figurations of the island in the poetry of Natália Correia: from the expression of azorean identity to the quest for universality

Among the various poetic motifs threaded throughout Natália Correia’s verses, the Island and its representations emerge as significant themes. Infused with a distinct sentiment for those whose roots trace back to the Island, Natália identifies herself, on one hand, as an "insular girl," attributing to the Island the pivotal role of her endogenous nurturer. Yet, on the other hand, she delineates herself from that realm of belonging and identity to compose a universal hymn, advocating for the promotion of the Island as a sanctuary accessible solely to her, the poet, through remembrance, dreams, and nostalgia. Natália Correia (re)configures the Island as a multifaceted space through a distinctive literary expression, a product of an intrinsic and psychological Azorean nature. Her poetic language resonates with echoes of universality, crafting a unique portrayal of the Island that exists (solely) within the universe of (her) Poetry.
