Abstract

Throughout his oeuvre, Russian thinker Mikhail Bakhtin develops an innovative theoretical device in order to properly deal with the language of the novel, considering a set of works he understood as more prototypical of the genre. However, the author also considers how, during periods when the novel becomes predominant in a given society, other genres tend to become “novelized”, including poetry, which then begins to show features of novelistic language, such as the presence of what Bakhtin termed “heterodiscourse” (raznorechie) and a tendency towards dialogism (as opposed to the “monologism” more typically predominant in traditional poetry). In this paper, we’ll go through a brief exploration of possible applications of Bakhtinian thought in poetry analysis, exemplified through a reading of poems by Brazilian Modernists Oswald de Andrade and Manuel Bandeira. Such a reading allows us to perceive how conscious implementation of these elements from prose into poetry (while still retaining their characterization as poems, subjected to common techniques of poetic interpretation) is an essential part of the literary project of early Brazilian modernists.
