This study aims to analyze the female character Clara dos Anjos, in Lima Barreto’s nohomonymous narrative using the theory of the imaginary and approaches on blackness and gender. The narrative Clara dos Anjos brings to light the suburban regions of Rio de Janeiro at the turn of the twentieth century and (re)watches over the feminine role of submission, abandonment and violence, as well as vexatious exposure. The purpose of the study is to portray the way in which women were used as a bargaining chip for marriage agreements, prevailing the paternal and marital will that suggest oppression and the place women were subjugated to in the society of Rio de Janeiro at that time.Downloads
