This study examines one of the five narratives of the distant and forgotten book of Visconde de Taunay, Narrativas Militares (1878), about the historical facts of the War of Paraguay: either in intimate dilemmas experienced by the characters, or in political conflicts appointed as backdrop of this historical process and in social relations that are established in times of war. It is “A Vingança de um Recruta” [The revenge of a recruit] whose main character came from Bahia that, comically, undoes the myth of patriotic volunteers, revealing as unfair an inefficient a military system.Downloads
