Sexuality and conflicting identities in Acenos e afagos, by João Gilberto Noll

One of the main themes of Acenos e afagos (2008), by the writer Joao Gilberto Noll, is the uncertain identity of the character João Imaculado. Narrowly linked to sexuality, this identity in the novel is described as disturbing experiences for it is not focused on neither heterosexuality nor homosexuality. The character lives the tension of a problematic masculinity, as suggested by Giddens (1993) at the same time determined and conditioned by interactions who define him as a husband, an adolescent's father and a homosexual partner. We want to show in this article dedicated to understand this theme in the Noll's novel that it is part of a larger contextualization of sexuality in contemporary societies, of which the Brazilian literature participates as imaginative constructs about these conflicting possibilities.Downloads
