The present research discusses the way how the “gaúcha” society represents itself in the literary text “A salamanca do Jarau”, written by João Simões Lopes Neto. For that, some self-identity’s structural oppositions are investigated, based on a particular reading of the relations between them and the mythic past attributed to the social group, intending to discuss the society’s present situation. The analysis of the characters’ opinions, and of the symbolic elements present in the narrative makes see the consolidation of the changes occurred in the process of constitution of a cultural identity of the represented society.Downloads
