Abstract

This paper presents a brief historical retrospective on foreign language learning and teaching, especially English, in our country. The paper also discusses the importance -or not - of learning a foreign language. In addition, it discusses some challenges and perspectives that teaching training programs have to deal with in Brazil. Furthermore, the paper sheds light on some aspects related to the politics of foreign language teaching.

Diógenes Cândido de Lima, Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia

Possui graduação em Letras/Inglês pela Faculdade Educacional Nordeste Mineiro (1985), graduação em Luinguística - Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (1979), mestrado em Community Development/Adult Education - Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (1982) e doutorado em Educacao com concentracao em Estudos da Linguagem - Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (1996). Atualmente é professor colaborador da Universidade Federal da Bahia. Tem experiência na área de Letras, com ênfase em Línguas Estrangeiras Modernas, atuando principalmente nas seguintes áreas: aquisição de segunda língua, ensino e aprendizagem de língua estrangeira, formação de professor de língua estrangeira, políticas de ensino de língua estrangeira, biligüísmo.e comunicação intercultural
