Foreign language teaching and English teacher education in the present context

This paper presents a brief historical retrospective on foreign language learning and teaching, especially English, in our country. The paper also discusses the importance -or not - of learning a foreign language. In addition, it discusses some challenges and perspectives that teaching training programs have to deal with in Brazil. Furthermore, the paper sheds light on some aspects related to the politics of foreign language teaching.
