Abstract

Firstly, this study reflects on the phenomenon of rhotacism in the history of the Portuguese language, from the panchronic linguistic point of view. Next, from an episode in which rhotacism imprints itself on an English sign, this work tries to discuss the assumed belief that the spread of the global language signifies a death sentence for the local languages.

Mari Inês Pagliarini Cox, Universidade Federal do Mato Grosso

Possui graduação em Letras Anglo pela Universidade Estadual de Maringá (1975), mestrado em Lingüística pela Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (1978) e doutorado em Educação pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (1989). Atualmente é professora do Programa de Mestrado em Estudos de Linguagem na Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso.
