Abstract

The concept of face (GOFFMAN, 2001) was used in this article to confirm the hypothesis that the use of would instead of going to by an English teacher during a pre-observation encounter serves to place her in the position of an outsider of her own lesson. By using would, according to Lewis (1998, p. 122), "the speaker perceives the situation as hypothetical at the moment of speaking". It is remote from the speaker and non-factual. Therefore, the teacher keeps the class at a distance in order not to lose her face.

Adelaide Augusta Pereira de Oliveira, Universidade do Estado da Bahia

Obteve o título de mestrado em Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages na School for International Training (2000). É especialista em Linguistica (1978) e graduou-se em Letras Com Ingles (1977) sendo que ambos os títulos foram obtidos na Universidade Federal da Bahia. Atualmente é professora adjunto da Universidade do Estado da Bahia, ,consultora para avaliação de Cambridge da Sociedade Brasileira de Cultura Inglesa da Bahia, professora visitante nos cursos de pós-graduação da Universidade Estadual do Sudoeste da Bahia.
