The aim of this article is to reflect on the differences between the notions of textual types and text genres and their influences upon the development of writing and reading in the mother tongue, at different levels of education. Thus, this work aims to contribute to minimize the conceptual confusion surrouding this issue which has brought negative reflexes on the way texts and discourses are dealt with in the classrooms.
