Abstract

The conflict in Ukraine, which erupted in February 2022, has triggered a profound and irreversible reconfiguration of the global energy system and the contemporary geopolitical order. This article examines the structural transformation of the energy policies of Russia and the European Union (EU), driven by the intensifying geopolitical tensions stemming from the war. The research focuses on Russia's strategic pivot towards Asia, particularly China, as a response to Western sanctions and the loss of the European market, as well as the EU's urgent initiatives to diversify its energy sources, with a growing reliance on liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States. The findings reveal that these shifts have not only altered regional dynamics but are also redefining global power structures. Energy, traditionally a cornerstone of international power, now plays a central role in the evolving geopolitical order, influencing alliances, supply chains, and security strategies. This study contributes to the understanding of the complex interactions between energy, power, and geopolitics in a fragmented and competitive world, highlighting the significance of these changes in anticipating future crises and identifying new movements in the redistribution of international power.
