Brazilian Orange Juice Exports Competitiveness: 1990/2001

The work analyzes the competitiveness of the orange juice exportations in period 1990/2001. In the analyzed period, three economic events had affected the exportations: in 1990, the commercial opening deepened; in 1994, the implementation of the Real Plan; and in 1999, the exchange depreciation of Brazilian currency. Brazil is world-wide exporter due to the lowest cost of agricultural and industrial production, the country also has a lower labor cost comparing with other countries; the country has the most competitive citrus chain of the world. The sector is highly concentrate, dominated for basically five great industries what provides better prices with suppliers. The Brazilian orange juice production is export oriented. The methodological procedures had involved analysis of the evolution of the exportations and the use of the Constant-Market-Share model to analyze the factors of the growth of the Brazilian exportations: growth of the world-wide market, destination of the exportations and competitiveness. The results had disclosed to the loss of participation of the Brazilian exportations in the period, indicating necessity to conquer new external markets and to join efforts politicians in order to reduce international barriers.
