The increase in the cesarean section rate has been of serious concern to obstetricians and health authorities. Several experiments show an increasing frequency on the cesarean operation rate lately. In this study, the authors show the incidence and indications of all cesarean section done from March of 1987 to February of 1988, in Hospital Universitário Regional do Norte do Parana, in Londrina. The percentage of cesarean during sections the period of study was 19,8% and the five most frequent indications found were; two or more previous cesarean section, dystocia, acute fetal distress, pelvic apresentation and fetopelvic disproportion. It was also demonstrated that one previous cesarean section was 9° most frequent cause of indications. Only with the introduction of a constant supervision and control of the indications by obstetricians, as well as with the continuation of experiments and research - like this one - if will be possible to know which are the real causal factors of this data and the evolution of the cesareans section rate in this institution.
