In this paper, a brief description of the Clinical Engineering is presented, since its origins in the early forties until the mid nineties in Brazil and in the United States of America. A comparison of the situation of the Clinical Engineering in these countries is also carried out. The evolution, the current situation and the new perspectives of the Clinical Engineering for this millennium will be discussed in another paper.
