Abstract

One hundred and ninety-one swines, kept for subsistance and comercial aims at the districts of Amparo, Arrozal, Cachoeiras de Macacu, Iguaba Grande, Paracambi, Pinheiral, State of Rio de Janeiro, were examined for Tritrichomonas suis from material recovered either with nasal swabs or from feces samples. Both were examined under light microscope and maintened in Diamond medium (DIAMOND, 1957) and showed to be negative after direct examination by light microscopy. Nevertheless, cultured samples (16 from feces and 03 from nasal swabs) were positive for T. suis 48 and 96 hrs, respectively. Parasitism occurred in 1,57% of nasal cavities and 8,38% of gastroenteric tracts samples in swines apparently healthy with no signs of simultaneous infections affecting either respiratory or digestive systems. Prevalence of infection was of 9,95% in the examined swines.
