Abstract

The aim of this study was a comparative analysis of the social media language learning Livemocha (versions 2011 and 2018) to understand what can be improved in terms of the gamification experience. To this end, in the first step was apllying the evaluation of the functionality (according to previous literature review studies) and the heuristic game evaluation (by the authors Isbister and Schaffer (2008)) to both versions of Livemocha (2011 and 2018). Second step, based on the results, an evaluation instrument was developed and applied to users of social media language learning with the aim of of collecting reports about their experience. Results reveal that, in the evaluation of the functionality and heuristic game in Livemocha 2011 version perfomed better and, other aspects regarding gamification experience need improvements in both versions (2011 and 2018). The results of the evaluation instrument showed that most users do not think that gamification is the main factor that encourages the study of another language, but gamification is important for engagement and to stay longer on the platform. The need of differentiation between lesson levels (basic, intermediate and advanced), inclusion of test level and visualization of their own performance in studies were highlighted.
