Artificial Intelligence Use Policy

The journal História & Ensino, taking into account the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and the scientific integrity guidelines applicable to scholarly communication, recognizes that artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are part of the contemporary scientific research landscape. Their use must adhere to the principles of transparency, responsibility, scientific integrity, and respect for human intellectual authorship.

1. General Principles

Authorship of manuscripts submitted to the journal must be exclusively human. Artificial intelligence systems may not be listed as authors or co-authors, nor may they assume responsibility for published content.

The use of AI is permitted as a supporting tool, provided that it does not replace the authors' intellectual contribution to the development, analysis, interpretation, and argumentation of the scholarly work and complies with the provisions of this policy.

Authors are responsible for the originality, accuracy, integrity, and reliability of all content submitted, regardless of the tools used during its preparation.

2. Permitted Uses

Artificial intelligence tools may be used for auxiliary activities, such as:

  • Spelling, grammatical, and syntactic correction;
  • Stylistic editing and improvement of textual clarity;
  • Assistance with text translation, provided that the translation is reviewed by the authors and that responsibility for the conceptual, analytical, and argumentative content remains with them;
  • Technical assistance limited to the linguistic organization of the manuscript.

In these situations, AI must serve as an auxiliary instrument without replacing the authors' intellectual work or compromising the originality and scientific integrity of the research.

3. Prohibited Uses

The journal does not accept the use of artificial intelligence to replace the authors' intellectual contribution to the preparation of manuscripts. The following practices are prohibited:

  • Using AI systems to generate all or a substantial portion of the manuscript's argumentative content;
  • Delegating to automated systems the formulation of analyses, interpretations, theoretical discussions, or conclusions that should result from the authors' intellectual contribution;
  • Submitting texts in which the essential academic work has been delegated to automated content-generation tools;
  • Presenting content substantially generated by AI as if it were the result of the authors' own intellectual work;
  • Using AI tools to produce or manipulate data, sources, citations, or references in ways that compromise the reliability and integrity of the scholarly work.

Failure to comply with these provisions may be considered a violation of the journal's academic integrity standards and may result in a request for clarification, rejection of the manuscript, or other appropriate editorial measures.

4. Declaration of Artificial Intelligence Use

Authors must declare the use of generative AI tools at any stage of the research or manuscript preparation process, including, where applicable, conception, writing, editing, translation, data analysis, and preparation of the text for submission. The declaration must be made at the time of submission, using the relevant field or messaging functions available in the journal's system, in accordance with the editorial guidelines.

The declaration must specify:

  • The name of the tool used;
  • The purpose for which it was used;
  • The stage of the work at which it was used and the nature of the assistance provided;
  • Confirmation that the authors have verified the content produced or suggested by the tool and remain fully responsible for the manuscript.

The following wording is suggested:

“The author(s) declare(s) that the artificial intelligence tool [tool name] was used during the [specify stage] stage for the purpose of [describe the purpose and nature of the use]. The content produced or suggested by the tool was reviewed by the authors, who assume full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and intellectual content of the manuscript.”

The declaration of AI use does not authorize practices prohibited by this policy. Failure to provide a declaration when required may lead to a request for clarification and other appropriate editorial measures.

5. Authors' Responsibility

Authors remain fully responsible for:

  • The originality and integrity of the manuscript;
  • The accuracy of the information and data presented;
  • The authenticity of the sources consulted;
  • The accuracy of citations and bibliographic references;
  • The verification of information, statements, and content produced or suggested by AI tools;
  • The ethical and transparent use of the technologies employed in preparing the work.

The use of artificial intelligence does not transfer or diminish the authors' responsibility for the content submitted or published.
