Abstract

Think historically the urban through the art of the Diocesan Cathedral from Jacarezinho – PR, it is what this dissertation is based on, after all, we realize the art can say by itself, but also about the cultures, sociabilities and customs from the period that it was produced. In this sense, the architectural grandeur of this temple is the material manifestation of religious power (catholic) and economical (coffee crops sector) at the town, and the wall pictures of Eugênio de Proença Sigaud authorship, are a valuable register about the artist view to this city in the 1950s, Since his work keeps the particularity to bring townspeople to represent biblical characters, for example, we identified altar boys, mayor, bricklayers, nuns and other hundreds represented on it, herein the polemic and famous personalities like Marx, Lênin and the Pope Pius XII. For this purpose, we face visuals sources with journals, and memories – handwriting, oral, and official sources and, that way, we built a historical narrative about the intriguing process of the Diocesan Cathedral embellishment from Jacarezinho by this modern, communist, and atheist painter that received an invitation from his brother, the bishop Dom Geraldo de Proença Sigaud, nationally renowned for his ultra-conservative and anticommunist posture.
