Resumo

A vitória de Salvador Allende em 1970 não foi apenas um evento decisivo no contexto chileno, mas também teve um eco global, transformando o experimento incipiente que buscava criar uma alternativa democrática ao socialismo em um evento que capturou a atenção de militantes em todo o mundo. Dentro desse público cativo, três membros da Nova Esquerda dos EUA, ligados ao movimento Yippie e desiludidos com a situação de suas lutas no país, decidiram embarcar em uma viagem para conhecer o novo Chile em primeira mão. Nosso artigo reconstrói essa viagem, com o objetivo de mostrar as interações particulares que cada um dos viajantes teve com a realidade chilena: as características e os limites do projeto da Unidade Popular, a cultura como elemento constituinte do projeto de mudança e o desenvolvimento paralelo da contracultura juvenil.
