This article proposes to discuss how aspects of the Anglo-American vanguards developed in the cultural background of the Brazilian Northeast in the fi rst half of the twentieth century. Discussing some topics concerning Gilberto Freyre’s work (1900-1987), it will be possible to observe how aesthetics lessons of the international vanguards, mainly represented by the Imagism and by the poet Amy Lowell (1874-1925), encouraged the search for an artistic form committed with the regional material. Thus, assuming the paradox between tradition and modernity, the modern-regionalist proposal seems to refl ect the controversial place of a plural Brazil.Downloads
