Instituições e Crise Ambiental: Contribuições da Sociologia Ambiental

Since the 1970s environmental sociology has been trying to relate the causes of degradation and environmental crisis to the institutional structure that is active in western societies. In this article, the North-American lines of thought as well as the reflective modernization of the environmental sociology are analyzed to answer two specific questions: which is the role of the institutions in the environmental crisis foreseen in the environmental sociology and which are the main limits of these institutional interpretations and their repercussions in order to consider the transformation of the institutions related to the environmental crisis. Despite relative differences in the identification of the institutions responsible for the environmental crisis (consumption culture, economy, State, science and technology) and in the belief of reversing this crisis, almost all lines of thought tend to disregard power relations between the political and economical systems as well as the social inequality deriving from these relations.
