Abstract

In Brazilian Portuguese possessive constructions containing the prepositional "a" were considered grammatical in the 19th century and agrammatical in the 20th century. This paper presents a quantitative analysis of this change and discusses two hypotheses to explain it.

Possui graduação em Letras pela Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (1977) e doutorado em Lingüística pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (1992), pós-doutorado na USP sobre História da Língua (2000). Atualmente é Professor Associado II na Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais.
