This paper analyses the structure ser de (se) V(inf.) in Portuguese. In order to investigate the syntax, semantics and pragmatics of this structure, we applied (a) the notion of grammatical construction, (b) the notion of modality as a force dynamics system, including the epistemic domain, (c) the notion of hedge as a politeness strategy. Based on these notions, we argue that ser de (se) V(inf.) is (i) a productive grammatical construction, which has a gap that must be filled with a cognitive verb, (ii) a hedge, whose meaning is epistemic and whose function is to preserve the reader’s/writer’s figure.
