The Sport Club do Pará: sport and civility in Belém (1896-1918)

This article aims to analyze the representations created around sports in clubs in Belém, specifically in Sport Club do Pará, as well as to identify contextual elements through them in relation to the cultural and social panorama of the period. The methodology used will be documentary-bibliographic, with a historiographical approach to sources and their interpretation in light of the cultural history of Chartier (2002) and Raymond Williams (1980). According to Chartier (2002), the study of the representations that run through specific groups or institutions can provide us with a relevant way to understand certain social realities. This perspective can be used in free associations such as clubs, through which it is possible to understand cultural phenomena specific to the context in which they are found (Williams, 1980). In this line, the study of the Sport Club do Pará club, created at the height of the dissemination of clubs in Belém during the late 19th century, allows us to understand sports as experienced around the ideals of civility (Elias, 2011) current in modernity and that are appropriated by the Belém experience.
