Standard tests were used to evaluate quantitative aspects of education, in 1993, a multiple choice questions with 97 items was applied to students who were graduating in Nursing from the State University of Londrina, with the aim at evaluating their performance. The same tests were also answered by nursing students of six other colleges at Paraná State so that results could be compared with those obtained by students of Londrina. The mean mark (61,1) achieved by student's of Londrina was statistically different from that of schools "D" (50,7), "E" (43,8) and "F" (45,3). However there was no statistical evidence for a difference between results obtained by students of Londrina and those achieved by students of schools "A", "B" or "C". Also, there was no statistical difference for mean marks obtained in different areas of knowledge public health (75,3), communicable diseases (73,7) and medical-surgery (60,0) between students of Londrina and students of the schools with the highest performance (A, B and C). in psychiatry, the mean mark was less than 50,0 and there was no statistical difference between the seven schools, it has been suggested that the instrument should go under review and other applications be performed.
