Do medo à aceitação: sentimentos de gestantes diante do diagnóstico de sífilis no pré-natal

Abstract

Objective: To understand the emotional experiences of pregnant women facing a diagnosis of syphilis during prenatal care. Methodology: This is a descriptive, exploratory study with a qualitative approach. Data collection took place between June and December 2023 and was conducted through interviews guided by a semi-structured script with pregnant women diagnosed with syphilis who were receiving care at Primary Health Care Units in a municipality in Paraná, Brazil. The results were analyzed according to Bardin’s content analysis. All ethical principles were respected. Results: Two major categories were identified and served as the basis for the analysis: Maternal feelings in response to the diagnosis of syphilis during pregnancy and Impressions regarding the follow-up provided by nurses during the prenatal care pathway. For the pregnant women, the positive diagnosis represented a difficult moment; fear and concern regarding the fetus’s health were the most frequently highlighted feelings. Treatment was perceived as a source of hope, having a positive impact on disease management. Regarding prenatal follow-up conducted by nurses, the pregnant women reported feeling satisfied and welcomed. Conclusion: Understanding the experiences of pregnant women with syphilis is essential for health professionals to provide adequate support. Therefore, aiming to improve the quality of care, it is necessary to disseminate information about syphilis to the population through practical health education initiatives.
