The history, physical and chemical properties, pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics, adverse effects, toxicity, clinical use in wild and domestic species and drug interactions with glyceryl guaiacol ether, an a-glyceryt ether, is presented. Guaiphenesin produces muscle relaxation without affecting diaphragmatic function. Besides muscle relaxation, the drug produces hypocholesterolemia, hypouricemia and has antitussive and expectorant actions, among others. It is a safe agent, but can produce thrombophlebitis, intravascular hemolysis, soft tissue necrosis, tearing, vomiting, salivation and liver and kidney lesions. In veterinary anaesthesia it is widely used alone or combined with other agents, administered by bolus or continous intravenous infusion, as a component of a balanced anaesthetic technique.
