Objective: The aim of this study was to map research on user studies in the different working groups of the Encontro Nacional de Pesquisa em Ciência da Informação, more specifically regarding information retrieval and use. The general objective is to verify how user studies are being distributed across the various working groups of the Event.
Methodology: The research presents a qualitative and quantitative approach. To this end, the research indexed in the repository called BENANCIB was analyzed, covering the period between 2005 and 2023 (eighteen years), aiming to understand the approaches to user studies, especially focusing on aspects related to information retrieval and use.
Results: From the analysis carried out, it became evident that user studies regarding information retrieval and use must be understood in an integrated manner, since a set of knowledge has already been accumulated by researchers from the different working groups. The challenges that arise in research related to user studies are significant and, for this reason, they must be conducted in an interrelated manner and not in a compartmentalized manner, as is the case in the Event. The fragmentation of this theme can consolidate the intellectual engagement of different segments of researchers and institutions.
Conclusions: As final considerations, we highlight the emancipation of the user, especially regarding the processes that involve the recovery and use of information in the spheres of professional, social, cultural and intellectual activity, in different types of institutions: economic, business, social, educational, political, cultural, as well as in society in general. From this perspective, dialogue between different researchers on the subject is necessary, regardless of the working group they attend. Especially regarding the user studies in the different working groups of the Encontro Nacional de Pesquisa em Ciência da Informação, we conclude that there is a dispersion of user studies, a factor that can weaken the intellectual dialogue between seniors’ and juniors’ researchers who research this subject in the scientific field of Information Science in Brazil. On the other hand, an opportunity is seen to promote events focused on the theme of ‘user studies’, in which different stakeholders from different sub-areas of knowledge can dialogue and cooperate in research projects, research groups, and joint work that addresses the theme.
