Abstract

Objective: to develop a scientific mapping of the Metaverse and its intellectual structure.
Methodology: This is a Systematic Literature Review of the bibliometric type, using the Bibliometrix algorithmic package and the web application Biblioshiny through the R Software and RStudio.
Results: 684 documents were identified, with 1549 authors and 20,587 references. The data show that two articles were published in 1995, with 27 citations. From 2000 to 2007, between one and six studies were published, but the subject began to attract the attention of researchers from 2008 onwards, reaching 48 publications in 2021 and reaching a peak of 348 publications in 2022. growth of publications in areas of knowledge such as: health, education and marketing. Six articles were published in journals in the field of Information Science.
Conclusions: It is concluded that the Metaverse has been studied in academia since 1995, but it has gradually achieved greater research interest, especially in terms of its applicability to the field of distance education, in search of more immersive learning. Although the games area came out ahead in Metaverso, the areas of health, technology, administration and marketing stand out in the application of Metaverso within their fields of interest.
