The signa loquendi of the Monastery of Alcobaça

Abstract

Some of the manuscripts of Saint Mary´s monastery maintained by the Nacional Library of Lisbon, Portugal, reproduce lists of signals used during the XIV – XVI centuries by the monks for their own communication during the period of silence imposed by the benedictine rule. The signa loquendi were moviments made with the hands or with the fingers of the hand to designate subjetcs/objects concretes and/or absracts, constituting a modality of gestual communication. This article will discuss the genesis, evoluiton, composition and meaning of this gestual communication in the simbolic systems of monkish inspiration.
