Lula, Milei e o ajuste fiscal: o discurso de austeridade e hegemonia neoliberal nos grandes jornais da mídia brasileira

Abstract

This article analyzes how Brazilian media reproduces and legitimizes neoliberal narratives in the newspapers Folha de São Paulo, O Globo, and O Estado de São Paulo, focusing on texts published between November and December 2024 regarding the fiscal adjustment promoted by the Lula Government and issues related to Argentina and the Milei Government. It seeks to understand how these outlets advocate austerity policies as inevitable, while concealing their impacts on the working classes. We applied discourse analysis, combined with a materialist and historical perspective, to investigate 18 texts, including editorials and opinion pieces. The results show that the newspapers reinforce the centrality of the market and present neoliberal reforms as technical solutions. By exalting economic efficiency as an absolute priority, they marginalize the social impacts of the policies defended, reinforcing neoliberal hegemony.
